About Joe Coutanche
Joe is passionate about all things boating with a love for being on the water. Stemming from his previous experiences within marine industries.
Starting from a young age he enjoyed being out on the water competing in optimists, honing his wind awareness and sailing skills on the model yacht pond in Guernsey on oppies which he carried through to the sea.
Competing in races and training every weekend. Before progressing to the RSFeva class, which included further training which strengthened his boat handling skill and knowledge of a more complex rigging style and. Competing in National competitions for 4 years gaining respectable results with his crew.
Progressing from the Fava Joe enjoyed the challenging learning curve of helming and crewing the pre-olympic class 29er, competing in lots of local regattas helming against and in other dinghy classes. Competing in the 2019 National Championship also.
This spearheaded him towards wanting to compete in the next nationals and worlds. Looking to train with the Scottish Nationals Squad, however due to Covid-19 the competitions were cancelled and so he decided to move away from the class and has raced on and off since.
Finding a love for yacht racing, competing all year round on a Melges 24, learning more about sailing angles, the effects trim has on a keelboat and the effects the larger tidal range of Guernsey has on longer leg racing.
He also honed his boating skills working as part of the team, trimming the symmetrical spinnaker when the wind was lighter due to his weight. He also has experience trimming and crewing on both a Sunfast 3600 and Pogo850.

Joe hasn’t only built his experiences in just dinghies but also powerboats. Competing from the age of 8 in the Honda Rib Challenge. Winning the Channel Island Championship 3 times in both the Under 12 and Under 16 categories respectively.
He then furthered his skills and progressed as an instructor, obtaining his PB2 which helped him provide better experiences while assisting the training of the RS Feva fleet.
When he turned 16 Joe decided that he was going to obtain some more qualifications and better his knowledge of teaching.
Gaining both his Powerboat Instructor and Dinghy Instructor. Able to teach PB2s before he could drive. He then continued teaching wherever possible, devoting weekends from first School and then Full Time employment whenever possible.
Joe has also enjoyed boating recreationally with both family and friends. Having experience helming Ribeye A600-S785, Botnia Targa 27.2, Seaward 29, Avon Searider SR4 and Fairline Targa 52.
Enjoying Island hopping across the bailiwick, alongside day trips to France and Jersey.
